Hindraf chief P Waythamoorthy is determined to press on with his hunger strike despite doctors' warning of possible irreparable damage to his body.

NONEHindraf national advisor N Ganesan (left) said the movement was also in a difficult position as Waythamoorthy has insisted that the decision is his alone.

"It is a difficult question for us because Waythamoorthy has conveyed to us that if his body can no longer take it, and the doctor says so, please allow him to decide.

"We feel 21 days (of hunger strike) is long enough, but at this point it will continue indefinitely, we are not in a position to do much except to support him," he said.

According to Ganesan, Waythamoorthy is completely bedridden today.

"For most of the last 20 days he has been mobile but today he is confined entirely to his bed."

Ganesan hopes that the continued hunger strike will open Pakatan and BN's "mind and eyes" to Hindraf's blueprint for helping the Indian poor.

"We have always told Pakatan (Rakyat) to embrace us, don't push us into the arms of Umno, we are not going out to look for the other side.

‘Persistence has a price'

Talks with Hindraf and Pakatan had broken down when the latter refused to endorse the movement's blueprint while talks with the BN are at the preliminary stage starting with a meeting with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on Monday.

PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim had said that the crux of Hindraf's blueprint was already in Pakatan's Buku Jingga and did not want policies to be racial in nature.

Ganesan said it was unfair to label the movement's struggle as racist, stating that it was fighting for defenceless Indians.

He had been getting updates from Waythamoorthy several times a day but could no longer do so as he was too weak to talk, Ganesan said.

"His voice is now all muffled... but he is not about to stop the hunger strike. Sometimes persistence is the answer and there is a price for persistence," he said.

"We hope they (the politicians) do not fail him and the people he represents."

Waythamoorthy began his hunger strike on March 10 at a temple in Rawang.
