The frequent heavy rain and thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds recently is due to the transition from the north-east monsoon to the south-west monsoon, said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD).

MMD deputy director-general Alui Bahari said the one-month transition period will affect the peninsula's west coast throughout April, usually during the evening.

“The public need not worry about this erratic weather as this is normal and happens each year during the monsoon transition period.

“Heavy rain is due to weak wind coming from all directions and land temperature will increase causing evaporation of water vapor which will form heavy clouds,” he said when contacted by Bernama in Kuala Lumpur today.

Alui said heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to be localised within two to three hours in rural areas or towns, but this situation is unlikely in coastal areas.

He said the monsoon transition period will end by May and hot and dry weather will take place throughout the south-west monsoon from May to September.

Alui also advised people to be careful in the rain, especially when driving, and are encouraged not to park under trees to avoid incidents involving uprooted trees and falling branches.
