As traditional TV media is going out of fashion, watching news from mobile platform such as tablet and smartphone has become the new daily norm.
People want to watch the news that matters, any place, anytime they want.
In order to meet that need, Malaysiakini is launching its latest initiative KiniTV, to provide video report of current affairs news to supplement independent news provided by Malaysiakini.com.
Its website address is www.kinitv.com while the YouTube URL is www.youtube.com/kinitv. KiniTV's Facebook Fan page is http://www.facebook.com/kinitv and Twitter account is: http://twitter.com/kinitv.
The monthly view of KiniTV is expected to reach over 2 million in March and is expected to grow tremendously, powered by the looming election.
Your Story, Our Camera
KiniTV is an Internet TV service where viewers play an active role in shaping the news agenda and disseminating news items, revolutionising the delivery of independent, accurate and timely news.
With the Tag line "your story, our camera", KiniTV will publish packaged news as well as videos including interviews with news personalities, coverage of press conferences, forums, rallies, feature stories and short documentaries.
"We will be producing news reports and talk-shows that come straight from the people and independent analysts, free from censorship and to promote dialogue and encourage transparency ", said KiniTV chief executive officer, Yong Kai Ping (right), who is also the founding editor of the Malaysiakini Chinese desk.
YouTube direct partner
As YouTube's Direct Partner like ABC News, Gannett, the Huffington Post, NPR, and the Washington Post, KiniTV content will be available for free, delivered through nearly all multimedia platforms including television, web browsers, smartphones and tablets.
60 million viewer and 57,000 subscribers
"KiniTV evolves from the successful Malaysiakini.tv project that has uploaded 6,323 video news video clips and features since 2006.
As of today, it has managed to attract more than 60 million views and 57,000 subscribers", said Chief Producer, Shufiyan Shukur (left), who has helmed Malaysiakini.tv since 2006.
The Malaysiakini.tv site will be retained and will present news features and documentaries, while KiniTV will present news video in a punchier style and current affairs talk shows ‘hot off the oven'.
KiniTV is set to bring news and current affairs to another paradigm. Shufiyan is also in the team that is putting together Asia Calling documentaries from Malaysia.
This one-hour weekly programme presented from Jakarta brings to Asia news features with a distinctly human interest slant, telling stories neglected by the mainstream media around Asia.
"The aim is to give voice to those unheard on a regional capacity," says Lynn D'Cruz, co-ordinator of the Asia Calling programme from Malaysia.
KiniTV also will be giving exposure to grassroots and community related stories through the Citizen Journalists Malaysia channel. "This channel features videos and reports from Citizen Journalists from all over the country," says Maran Perianen, director of Citizen Journalists Malaysia.
Interviewing first-time voters
"KiniTV seeks to increase its coverage leading up to the Malaysian general elections. KiniTV's coverage will help inform voters of the current political issues and adding to a more pluralistic media environment", said Premesh Chandran (right), Malaysiakini chief executive officer, who takes on the role of director of KiniTV.
KiniTV is currently looking to interview first-time voters happy to share their thoughts on camera, indifferent to political inclinations. Those who are interested, please email newsroom@kinitv.com.
