Himpunan Hijau chairperson Wong Tack has confirmed that various NGOs have proposed for him to stand as a candidate during the next general election.

Speaking to reporters in Temerloh this morning, Wong said the NGOs hopes he will contest in the parliamentary seat of Bentong, currently held by Health Minister and MCA deputy president Liow Tiong Lai.

Wong, best known for his environmental activism and more recently his campaign against the Lynas rare earth refinery in Gebeng, Kuantan, said that he is still considering the offer.

"(Environmentalist) NGOs might focus on Bentong (hence) they have suggested that I be a candidate (there).

"But at this moment, I have not accepted the proposal yet," he said.

The Bentong seat is considered a MCA stronghold. During the 2008 general election, Liow won by a huge majority of 12,549 votes, beating PKR candidate G Ponusamy.

No possibility

Speaking at the launch of Brigade Mat Kilau, Himpunan Hijau's propaganda team, Wong Tack also dismissed the possibility for the green movement to contest on an independent ticket.

NONEHe confirmed that it would cooperate with Pakatan in the coming general election.

Pahang DAP chief Leong Ngah Ngah (left), when contacted, said he welcomed "anyone who share similar objectives" to join the Pakatan struggle.

However, he said Pakatan leadership had the final say on determining Wong Tack's candidacy in Bentong.

The 30-strong brigade distributed anti-Lynas pamphlets in a Temerloh morning market. They also handed pamphets on anti-cyanide use at the Bukit Koman gold mine.

On the bank of the Pahang River, they took an oath to repel foreign colonisation including "toxic colonisation - alluding to Lynas and the Bukit Koman gold mine.

The brigade also presented two street theatre performances about a company trying to bribe its way into building a plant.
