'Tombstones' for three Pengerang activists

Three members of Gabungan NGO Pengerang, an ad-hoc organisation protesting the Pengerang petrochemical project in Johor, have claimed to receive death threats in the form of mock tombstones bearing their names.

In a statement, the NGO chairperson Anis Afida Mohd Azli said she had discovered the mock tombstone hanging on her house gate yesterday morning. It recorded her ‘death’ on ‘Feb 15, 2013'.
Pengerang PKR branch secretary Taufik Tahir and a local resident Yahaya Maspie received similar tombstones, sent to the PKR operations room and Yahaya's house respectively.
The police recorded statements from the trio after Anis lodged a report at Penawar police station yesterday afternoon.
“For me, this is like a death threat because a tombstone signifies death. I do not rule out the possibility that this is due to our protest against the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid) project in Pengerang,” she said.
She added that the group is unfazed and will continue to fight for the rights and interests of those affected by the mega-project.
Last September, a member of the NGO had received a bag containing a dead python a day before the Himpunan Hijau Lestari Pengerang protest rally.
The RM60 billion Rapid project, being implemented by Petronas, includes mass land acquisition that will see the relocation of affected villages.
Residents are also worried that there will be environmental pollution that will jeopardise their sources of livelihood, based on fishing.
