Liow refuses to respond to Lynas technical report

Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai today refused to respond to a report by a foreign expert engaged by environmental NGO Save Malaysia Stop Lynas (SMSL), saying it involved technical aspects.

The issue was not for him to explain, Liow said, adding that he would leave the matter to the experts.
"As I said, that one (the report) is technical, not for me to explain," he said when asked about the findings after he launched a Chinese New Year diet menu the Health Ministry is promoting as a guideline for those preparing Chinese dishes.
Asked about the ministry's next move, Liow dismissed the question, saying he would only talk about health issues today.
In its report released recently, the Germany's Oeko Institute criticised Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp) plan to recycle residue from its rare earths refining process, stating that it was "nonsense" and not feasible.
The institute's senior researcher and engineer Gerhard Schmidt said even if Lamp diluted its water leach purification waste stream down to one part per hundred, its resulting radiation would still be far above limits that are considered "beyond regulatory concern" or BRC, a radiation standard.
Liow also refused to give a direct answer when asked whether Korean pop artist Psy's performance at the BN Chinese New Year open house with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in Penang on Feb 11 would help to boost votes for the ruling coalition.
"I think the BN will continue to deliver good results in Penang. I made promises to the people that if Penang returns to the BN, we will bring forth a new Penang," he said.
He said the BN would come up with mass development agenda for the state, such as a free port, a new financial centre, global service centres and so on.
Liow said the BN, through its plans under the Economic Transformation Programme, would bring development to Penang as well as to the nation.
Psy, who has become a global hit with his horse-riding dance routine, has been invited by the BN to perform at its Chinese New Year open house in Penang.
