Residents of Kampung Pokok Asam, Jelutong, faced with eviction, are now increasingly squeezed, when the main road to the village was closed by the developer of a luxury housing project today.

Jelutong Residents Action Association chairperson Zarus Yusof said since this morning, the developer had fully closed the road by piling earth on the road.

"A total of 32 families are affected and we feel as if we are under siege.

“If we want to go out we have to use an alternative route which is narrow and further than the normal route," he told reporters after holding a demonstration in front of the private sector company which owned the project.

He said the closing of the access road is as if telling the residents to move out of the area, while the developer kept mum on its action.

A resident, only known as Quah, 58, claimed, since lately, the construction workers were becoming more aggressive, digging up earth and dumping stones indiscriminately with scant regards for public safety.

"Stones from the construction area were scattered on to the road used by residents. On Tuesday, a fight almost broke out after they threw stones at us when we told them to put them elsewhere," he claimed.

Another resident, Marina Ismail, 48, alleged, the developer acted as he pleased when constructing a drainage system, as the houses in the village were often inundated by mud floods.
