'Penang gov't affordable homes confusing'

The so-called affordable homes earmarked for Jalan SP Chelliah in George Town at a ceiling price of RM400,000 for a 1,000 sq feet is confusing for they are beyond the reach of those earning below RM5,000 a month, said Penang BN chairperson Teng Chang Yeow.
State BN says the ceiling price set by the Penang gov’t is beyond the reach of most residents who are in low and medium-income groups.
The so-called affordable homes earmarked for Jalan SP Chelliah in George Town at a ceiling price of RM400,000 for a 1,000 sq feet is confusing for they are beyond the reach of those earning below RM5,000 a month, said Penang BN chairperson Teng Chang Yeow.
"An affordable housing project should not be profit motivated, instead the goal is to ensure that the people's basic needs are being met," he told reporters after presenting incentives to outstanding PMR and Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) to 387 students from the northeast area, in George Town today.
He was commenting on Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's announcement yesterday that his administration was setting a ceiling price of RM400,000 for a 1,000 sq feet "affordable housing" unit scheduled to be built at Jalan SP Chelliah here.
The price for a similar sized unit in Bandar Cassia at Batu Kawan on the mainland was set at RM250,000.
Teng said the cost of construction of a terrace house was between RM130 and RM150 per sq ft and there was no excuse for the state government to offer a ceiling price of RM400,000 for 1,000 sq feet house.
In Nibong Tebal, Penang Umno Liaison Committee chairperson Zainal Abidin Osman said the ceiling price of the affordable homes was illogical for it was beyond the reach of 75 percent of Penang residents who were in low and medium-income groups.
"How many people in Penang can afford to pay for a RM400,000 house? Affordable homes should be priced between RM150,000 and RM250,000 a unit," he told reporters after presented the RM100 schooling assistance to 1,230 students from Seberang Perai Selatan at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Tasek Mutiara today.
Zainal Abidin, who is also rural and regional development ministry adviser, said that the definition of affordable homes interpreted the DAP-led state government was different from the federal government.
"Affordable homes built by the BN government are within the means of low and medium-income groups," he added.
