Environmental group Himpunan Hijau has decided to throw its weight behind Pakatan Rakyat in the coming general election, vowing to see BN off in six parliamentary seats in what he calls the Pahang "green corridor".

NONEThe group's advisor Wong Chin Huat (left) said while the state "green corridor" covers eight parliament constituencies and 23 state assembly seats, Himpunan Hijau will campaign in support of opposition candidates being fielded in Kuantan, Indera Mahkota, Temerloh, Raub, Cameron Highlands and Bentong.

These seats accords for 5.4 percent of the 112 seats needed to enable the opposition coalition to assume the federal government.

Wong added the campaign would also focus on 14 state seats which make up 63.6 percent of the 22 needed to topple BN in Pahang for a simple majority. There are 42 state seats altogether in Pahang.

He said in the green corridor itself, there are three main dangers to the environment - Lynas, the Raub gold mine and the logging in Cameron Highlands.

Hence, Wong said the Himpunan Hijau group, would double their efforts to form the 'Mat Kilau' army in all Parliament and state seats within the Pahang green corridor.

He said famed local hero Mat Kilau wanted to drive away the colonialists just as they wanted to stop the Australian-owned Lynas plant.

Foray into political arena

Meanwhile, in announcing the Himpunan Hijau's foray into the political arena, its president Wong Tack said the group was doing this to ensure a government that respects its people.

"We need to take strict measures to ensure the rakyat unite to form a government that will listen to the voice of its people.

"We want to see the country's administration respect human rights, the rakyat's voice, the ecology and the system," he said during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

Wong Tack said Himpunan Hijau will double their efforts to influence Malay voters to accept its agenda.

"With the mainstream Malay papers being controlled by BN, the correct information is not reaching the public. Hence, we will have the ‘Mat Kilau' army visit the family in kampungs to drive the message across," he said.
