Dissatisfied with police’s response over the death of C Sugumar, about 50 people held a peaceful protest in front of the Bukit Aman police headquarters today.

Led by members of the opposition and several NGOs, the group has been holding a sit-down protest since 10.45 this morning.

NONEWhen contacted, a lawyer representing Sugumar’s family, Latheefa Koya, said the group is demanding two things from the police - to issue a black-and-white document for a second post-mortem to be carried out, and to classify the case as murder.

“We have been here since this morning. The police only sent some public relations officers to meet us.

“But we sent them back, because we only want to meet with the representatives from the investigations department,” said Latheefa, who is also PKR legal bureau chief.

NONEThe protesters carried banners bearing wordings such as 'Najib tindas masyarakat India' (Najib is supressing the Indian community) and 'Rakyat dizalimi, kuasa disalahgunakan' (People are mistreated, power is abused).

Aside from Latheefa, among those present were PKR vice-presidents Nurul Izzah Anwar and N Surendran, PKR's Kapar MP S Manikavasagam, DAP's Teluk Intan MP M Manogaran, PAS' Hulu Langat MP Che Rosli Che Mat, PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan, Suaram executive director E Nalini and Malaysians for Beng Hock coordinator Ng Yap Hwa.

Sugumaran's mother K Manimagalay was also present.

The group dispersed about 4.30pm, after finally meeting with a CID legal adviser.
