Selangor gov't fails to set aside single moms suit

The Shah Alam High Court today dismissed an application by the Selangor government and Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to set aside a RM10.9 million suit by 2,020 single mothers.
The High Court finds that the single mothers’s claims were justified and gave the state government 30 days to file its defence.

The suit pertained to the defendants' alleged failure to fulfill the pledge they made in the 2008 general election manifesto that if they won, they would provide an allowance for all single mothers in the state.
Justice Yaacob Md Sam, in his ruling, said the plaintiffs' claim was justified and gave the defendants 30 days to file their defence before fixing the trial date.
The plaintiffs, represented by Selangor Single Mothers Association chairperson Murtini Kasman, filed the suit on Nov 22, 2012, naming the Selangor government comprising PKR, PAS and DAP as the first defendant and Abdul Khalid (left) as the second defendant.
In their statement of claim, the plaintiffs said they had placed high hopes on the defendants' pledge in the manifesto that their well-being would be taken care of and claimed the defendants had failed to even set up a scheme through which the allowance would be channeled to single mothers.
On Dec 12, 2012 the defendants filed an application to strike out the suit, countering that the claim based on the manifesto was not enforceable as it was not legally binding.
The that same day, 3,011 single mothers filed a similar claim against the defendants, involving about RM16.26 million.
Counsel Kamarudin Ahmad is representing the plaintiffs.
Meanwhile, Abdul Khalid said he would file an appeal against the High Court's decision.
