Liow: Two PTD trainees down with H1N1

Two Administrative and Diplomatic Officer (PTD) trainees from the National Institute of Public Administration (Intan) in Baling, Kedah, have been detected with the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, said Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai.

He said the victims were among 51 trainees at the centre, which accommodated 109 trainees, who experienced influenza-like symptoms such as continuous fever and flu.
The infected trainees were being treated at a private hospital in Ipoh, he said.
"The remaining 49 trainees only have influenza-like illness and have been allowed to continue with their training," he said during a news conference after officiating the 'Healthy Lifestyle With Skipping' campaign, in Kuala Lumpur today.
Liow advised the public to wash hands with the proper technique and to immediately seek treatment for fever or flu symptoms.
"This virus is not new in our country and it is contagious in crowds," he said.
On the health campaign, Liow said the programme was aligned with the Kuala Lumpur Rotary Club which targeted youths, especially school students, in line with the One Student, One Sport campaign to fight obesity.
He said the ministry viewed the rising obesity rate in the country as serious, and urged more people and non-governmental organisations to take part in such health programmes.
"Studies on obesity rates reveal that Malaysia is in sixth place in Asia, therefore the ministry is taking an initiative at the grassroots to curb this problem," he said.
Liow had previously announced that the ministry's study in April last year found 27.5 percent of school students were obese.
Kuala Lumpur Rotary Club president Chan Kam Fatt said 100,000 high-quality skipping ropes will be distributed to primary and secondary schools nationwide to promote the activity among students.
