EC to appoint observers from Asean for GE13

The Election Commission (EC) will appoint observers from several Asean countries to monitor the coming general election, said EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.
The EC will appoint observers from Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar and Thailand, and from the Asean secretariat itself.

He said the EC, through a selected panel which was set up on the advice of Wisma Putra, was expected to appoint observers from Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar and Thailand, apart from several observers from the Asean secretariat itself.
"At the moment, it has not been finalised as several countries such as Brunei, Singapore, Cambodia and Laos have not been invited. Wisma Putra will sort them out," he told reporters after the close of a briefing on the 13th General Election for Eastern Zone officers and assistants in Kuala Terengganu today.
Abdul Aziz said, apart from foreign observers, the EC was also appointing 16 non-governmental organisations (NGO) as neutral observers in the general election.
According him, of the total, nine NGOs are from Sarawak, four from Peninsula and the rest from Sabah.
He said the foreign observers and NGOs involved needed to fulfill several conditions set by the EC, adding that failure to comply could cause their names to be dropped from the list of observers.
He said each NGO could send three representatives for each section and if there were five NGOs interested in one section, there would be 15 observers in that section.
"They can apply for any location they wish to go to."
Abdul Aziz said the commission expected the total number of registered voters, currently at 13.1 million, to increase to 13.3 million if the new electoral roll, with 295,173, including 51,421 voters who changed their addresses at the end of last year, were included.
The EC had also set Jan 21 as the date to register applications for postal votes involving Malaysian students and workers abroad.
For postal votes in the country for the police, armed forces, media and EC personnel, the application can only be made after the dissolution of Parliament.
