The water supply disruption around Kuala Lumpur is now 95 percent restored, earlier than initially scheduled, following bypass works by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas).  

Syabas Technical Development executive director Ir V Subramaniam said the areas still without water were Taman Shamelin and Bandar Sri Permaisuri, as well as hilltop areas, which was expected to resume the latest by tomorrow morning.  

“The bypass need not have been done if the Langat 2 project had been implemented according to schedule or the Selangor government had agreed to build an additional pump house in March last year,” he said.

Almost half a million consumers in 90 areas including Jalan Semarak, Kampung Pandan, Kampung Baru Ampang, Taman Hillview, Ampang Saujana, Bandar Baru Ampang, Desa Setapak and Wangsa Melawati experienced water supply disruption since Dec 29, last year.  

Meanwhile, Subramaniam said supply to the Gombak area was completely restored since yesterday evening.  

“While waiting for the construction of the additional pump house by the Selangor government, Syabas suggests the Wangsa Maju pump house be upgraded.  

“We also hope the state government will treat this shortage seriously and help increase treated water capacity,” he added.

He also refuted accusations by several Selangor state leaders regarding the water supply disruption in Klang Valley, saying they were baseless.

The disruption was as a result of the Wangsa Maju pump house operating at overload to ensure the high demands for water was met, he added.

He also denied that the Selangor government knew about the faulty pump house and had communicated the matter to Syabas earlier.

"In March 2012, the federal government approved the proposal for the pump system and loaned funds to the Selangor government, but to date the additional pump system is still in the design stage," he said.

Meanwhile, Syabas issued a statement today saying the water supply disruption in the Petaling district has been fully restored.

The disruption was caused by a drop in water levels at the Subang Airport and Bukit Dengkil reservoirs.
