Pakatan offers monthly allowance for veterans

Veterans who have ended their service with the military without receiving pension would receive a monthly allowance if Pakatan Rakyat captures Putrajaya in the next general election, said PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli.

"If Pakatan comes into power, we will give priority to veterans. For those who have ended their service and are without pension, Pakatan’s manifesto committee is considering a monthly allowance that we can give them from Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT).
"We have calculated and we are confident that we can give the monthly allowance, although it may not be as high as a pension," he told a ceramah last night at Taman Rekreasi AU3, Wangsa Maju.
AU3 and the nearby Desa Tun Hussein Onn are two major residential areas where military personnel and members of other enforcement forces live.
According to Rafizi (right), the exact amount of the allowance has yet to be determined but the proposal has been conveyed to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.
In addition, Pakatan proposed to increase the government's contribution into LTAT to ensure the welfare of military personnel is safeguarded.
"Now the contribution is 15 percent; if we win, we could increase it to 20 percent," he said.
Without elaborating on the details, Rafizi also promised that the coalition would make the military personnel’s housing issue a priority.
The ceramah last night was the first leg of PKR’s campaign trail to major army camps nationwide to explain the Boustead-LTAT controversy to the military personnel.
The aim is to explain how the military personnel’s monthly contribution to LTAT is allegedly being misused via Boustead Holdings Bhd to buy out businessperson Deepak Jaikishan (above) and pay off Selangor Wanita Umno chief Raja Ropiaah Raja Abdullah.
The ceramah will move on to the naval base in Lumut, the Sg Besi army camp, Port Dickson navy base and the Royal Malaysian Air Force bases in Kuantan and Butterworth in the coming weeks.
The campaign is held with the help of PKR-friendly military veterans in the NGO Pahlawan.
