Penang police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the detainees, aged between 20 and 30, from Selangor, Penang and Kedah, managed to escape after hijacking the police truck and causing injuries to four policemen who were escorting them along the Butterworth outer ring road.
“These seven men are very dangerous and aggressive. Some of them are facing a murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code,” he told reporters after visiting the four injured policemen at the Seberang Jaya Hospital in Butterworth.
He said those being sought after were Mohd Noor Mustaffa from Kubang Semang in Butterworth; Mohd Fairuz Adam or known as Joe Mafia from Sungai Petani, Kedah; and Mohd Sharini Mat Noor from Kubang Ulu, Penanti; Farid Aktiar from Kapar, Klang; Hamizani Harun from Tasek Gelugor; Hisham Abdul Rahman from Bandar Puteri Jaya, Sungai Petani, Kedah; and Mohd Khairul Nizam Abdul Rani.
Police believe the suspects are still in Kampung Padang Cempedak where they escaped and that they will be arrested soon, he said.
Abdul Rahim said efforts to track down the detainees were ongoing, including through home-to-home search and roadblocks.
Public with information about the detainees are also advised to contact the nearest police station to facilitate in the investigation, he said.
Meanwhile, a construction worker in Bagan Ajam in Butterworth said he witnessed the whole incident and saw the police being beaten by the detainees.
“I was shocked to see four policemen being beaten by a group of men, but I just watched them as I was too scared to help thinking that they might have dangerous weapons,” said the worker who insisted anonymity.
He said he waited for the men to leave the scene in the police truck before finally helping the injured policemen.
