Upgrading for MCMC website to ease rebate bids

The Malaysian Communications Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is currently upgrading its website to allow quicker access to youths applying for the RM200 smartphone rebate.

An MCMC spokesperson told Bernama that the move was in response to numerous public complaints of difficulty to access the MCMC's website, http://pakejkomunikasibelia.skmm.gov.my for the purpose.
MCMC has received more than 200 applications since it initiated the online application process on Jan 1, this year.
Distribution of the rebate, costing the government RM300 million to benefit 1.5 million youths aged between 21 and 30 earning RM3,000 and below as announced by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak when tabling the 2013 Budget, is expected to be completed in a matter of weeks, according to the spokesperson.
The Youth Communication Package entitling youths to a RM200 rebate when buying a smartphone received overwhelming response, resulting in congestion to the MCMC’s website.
Mohamad Fazli Nordin, 25, said he waited until late at night, hoping to access the website more easily and fill the online application form but it was in vain despite persisting for four consecutive nights.
Kenny Lai, 22, an operations executive with a manufacturing company in Kuantan, Pahang, feared he might not be able to get the rebate which was limited to 1.5 million youths only, because of the difficulty in accessing the website.
Yong Jin Jin, 21, a third-year university student, said she had given up on trying to access MCMC’s website.
“Anyway the smartphone is not really necessary for me as the university provides broadband Internet access. An ordinary handphone is sufficient for me to communicate with family and friends,” she said.
Last Dec 27, MCMC announced that the target group could get the rebate only when buying 3G mobile phone costing up to RM500 from selected distributors and agents appointed by the service providers.
However, three days ago, Information, Communications and Culture Minister Rais Yatim announced that the cabinet had agreed that the youths could utilise the RM200 rebate to purchase any type of smartphone.
