The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) ended the second day of trading this year with a bang as it closed at a fresh all-time high of 1,692.65.

Despite profit-taking activities yesterday, share prices on the local bourse rebounded as early as the morning trade with the benchmark index surpassing the previous all-time high of 1,688.95 as early as the first five minutes of trading.

It continued to break fresh highs for the next three minutes before ending at 1,690.82 at 9.08am.

Persistent buying in selected heavyweights and bluechips during the last hour of trading put a steady pace for the FBM KLCI to hit another high, 17.93 points or 1.071 per cent higher at 4.50 pm and continued to stay at the level until closing.

The FBM KLCI hit fresh highs five times during the whole trading session today.

Telecommunications company Axiata, which accounted for 3.653 points to the barometer index's rise, gained 23 sen to RM6.81 with 25.479 million shares changing hands.  

Regional bourses strong

All was well for the regional bourses as they too remained on the uptrend with Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumping 86.62 points to 23,398.60 and Singapore's improving 23.06 points to 3,224.80.

Japan's Nikkei 225 was closed for holiday today.

On the local front, the Industrial Index increased 28.02 points to 2,794.9, the Plantation Index advanced 36 points to 8,231.75 and the Finance Index surged 93.43 points to 15,335.8.

The FBM Emas Index gained 120.32 points to 11,480.12, the FBMT100 advanced  119.45 points to 11,337.94, the FBM Mid 70 Index was 127.97 points higher at 12,422.27 and the FBM Ace Index increased 24.6 points to 4,226.71.

Winners thumped losers by 538 to 203 with 321 counters unchanged, 573 untraded and 18 suspended.

Total volume rose to 1.128 billion shares worth RM1.825 billion from 874.498 million shares valued at RM1.193 billion yesterday.

Volume on the Main Market increased to 861.083 million shares worth RM1.789 billion from Wednesday's close of 730.659 million units valued at RM1.17 billion.

UMW, Dutch Lady top gainers

Turnover on the ACE market rose to 200.651 million shares worth RM28.607 million compared with 90.098 million shares valued at RM15.631 million previously.

Warrants improved to 64.62 million units valued at RM6.978 million from yesterday's close of 51.298 million units worth RM6.157 million.

Top gainers UMW Holdings and Dutch Lady gained 54 sen each to RM12.50 and RM47 respectively and PPB Group advanced 48 sen to RM12.48.

Of the actives, Flonic Hi-Tec-Warrants and Integrated Rubber-WA edged up half a sen each to 5.5 sen and five sen respectively and Integrated Rubber rose 1.5 sen to 12.5 sen.

Among heavyweights, Maybank edged up one sen to RM9.04, Sime Darby gained 13 sen to RM9.59 and CIMB rose four sen to RM7.64.

Consumer products accounted for 65.651 million shares on the Main Market, industrial products 201.419 million, construction 41.573 million, trade and services 312.091 million, technology 43.52 million, infrastructure 35.445 million, finance 47.518 million, hotels 430,800, properties 74.62 million, plantations 23.61 million, mining 9,000, REITs 15.038 million and closed/fund 160,000.
