RM4bil budget, yet why is Sabah still poor, asks Xavier

The Sabah government has been asked what it has done with its RM4.09 billion budget for next year, when it is still one of the poorest states in Malaysia compared to Selangor which has a budget nearly three-quarters less, at RM1.63 billion.
The Selangor exco member, who was in Kuala Penyu during Pakatan’s tour to Sabah, queried where the allocation had gone.

“Sabah has been under the rule of BN and its party components for 49 years and the citizens are still bound by poverty, although once Sabah was rich with natural resources,” he said in a statement yesterday.
“The people of Sabah are still denied basic necessities such as clean water, electricity and good roads under Umno-BN rule in many parts of Sabah.”
Xavier also mentioned that during his visit he witnessed water pipes being installed along the road, but was told that water will only be channelled in five years’ time and during that period, water meters and pipes were to be installed in the residents’ houses.
“This means that the people of Sabah are forced to wait for at least three general elections (15 years) to obtain clean water in their houses,” he claimed, adding that BN has grabbed much of the country’s wealth without taking care of the people’s livelihood.
