Hadi allowed to explain 'Amanat' over RTM, says Rais

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang will be allowed to provide an explanation over Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) on his ‘Amanat Haji Hadi’ (Haji Hadi's Message) delivered in 1981 branding Umno members and supporters as infidels, Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim said today.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang will be allowed to provide an explanation over Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) on his ‘Amanat Haji Hadi’ (Haji Hadi's Message) delivered in 1981 branding Umno members and supporters as infidels, Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim said today.
He said Abdul Hadi would have to apply to the ministry stating the choice of channel to give the explanation.
"RTM can broadcast his statement if the contents are suitable and have news value. However, at the same time, Abdul Hadi should allow others to give their views as well because his message was delivered in 1981," he said.
Rais spoke to reporters after watching a rehearsal of the Malaysia Christmas and New Year 2013 celebration scheduled for Dec 31 at Dataran Merdeka.
Rais said the views of the Department of Islamic Development, Malaysia, (Jakim) and muftis should be taken into account to determine the status of the message in terms of the faith of Muslims following Abdul Hadi's branding of Umno members and supporters as infidels.
Abdul Hadi had said earlier today that he was prepared to explain the message if he was given the opportunity to do so live over a local television station.
Asked about the frequent dropped calls experienced recently by users of mobile telephones, Rais said it was not the fault of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
He said the telecommunications companies should provide a complete explanation of the problem to consumers and state the number of dropped calls users experienced every month.
"MCMC can take legal action if the telecommunications companies fail to overcome the problem," he said.
Last week, the media reported the worst incidence of dropped calls in the country.
Subsequently, MCMC Chief Officer of Resource Planning and Industry Development Ali Hanafiah issued a warning and said the MCMC would not hesitate to act under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Asked about a proposal by Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin that the government not impose a cap on the price of the 3G smartphones to be purchased by youths entitled to the RM200 rebate, Rais said he would raise the matter at the cabinet meeting on Jan 2.
New Year celebration
On the preparations for the Malaysia Christmas Open House and New Year 2013 celebration at Dataran Merdeka on Dec 31, Rais said he was satisfied with the rehearsal held today.
He said Dataran Merdeka was selected for the Malaysia Christmas Open House and New Year 2013 celebrations as well as the 1Malaysia New Year Run on Dec 31 because it was a historic venue for the country.
"The Christmas Open House and New Year celebration are held simultaneously to make a difference and kindle the spirit of unity among Malaysians in line with the 1Malaysia concept," he said.
He also said that the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, Murphy Nicholas Xavier Pakiam, would be invited to represent the Christian community at the open house.
