Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today proposed the setting up of an education foundation, Yayasan Pendidikan Pengerang (Pengerang Education Foundation), to look into the welfare and education needs of children in Pengerang.

muhyiddin visit penang 160612 He suggested that Petronas and Dialog Group Bhd, as well as other investors, contribute towards the setting up of the proposed foundation.

"It is for the future of the children of Pengerang," he told reporters after a briefing on the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC) project at the resettlement site for the Bayu Permai Plot A residents in Kota Tinggi, today.

The function was also attended by Johor Menteri Besar Abdul Ghani Othman, Pengerang Member of Parliament Azalina Othman and Johor Petroleum Development Berhad (JPDC) chief executive Mohd Yazid Jaafar.

Muhyiddin said contributions by Petronas and Dialog to the foundation, which he suggested should be managed by a board of trustees, could be used to provide scholarships for students.

In another development, Muhyiddin said he was satisfied with the progress of the PIPC project which would involve development of an area covering 8,800 hectares.

NONE He said the project would also involve provision of facilities, like housing and schools, as well as raw water supply for industrial needs at PIPC.

He reminded the people against exploiting the project into a political issue and use it to campaign for the coming general election.

"This project gives an economic impact not only to Johor to emerge as the oil and gas hub in the region, but also to the country's economy," he added.

In another development, Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the Education Ministry would study the 11-points resolution passed by the Congress of the Union of Teachers in the Malaysian Education Service (Kongres) to look after the interests of educationists and retired teachers.

He also told the Kongres to send the resolution to the ministry.

Muhyiddin said this when asked to comment on a newspaper report today on the resolution passed by the Kongres at its special executive council meeting last Saturday, which, among others, proposed the setting up of a teachers' bank and an organisation for teachers, like the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT).
