DAP has told PAS to immediately resolve issues of errant local council “saboteurs” in recent cases involving non-Muslims, to avoid jeopardising ties within Pakatan Rakyat.

NONE Expressing concern on a number of recent cases where non-Muslims in PAS-governed Kelantan had received summonses, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng ( right ) said he has spoken to his counterpart in PAS to resolve the issues.

“I have communicated these concerns to PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali, who has promised to liaise and resolve the matter.

“I told Mustapa Ali of the need to look at the matter seriously to prevent jeopardising mutual trust and the strong ties within Pakatan.

“I have also directed DAP MP for Bukit Bendera Liew Chin Tong to communicate with the PAS leadership on an immediate resolution on issues which relate to allegations of non-Muslims being subjected to Islamic laws,” said Lim in a statement today.

He added that if immediate action was not taken, it may undermine the cooperation within Pakatan Rakyat , denting its respect for freedom of religion message.

Lim cited today's reports on four non-Muslims in Kota Baru issued summonses by municipal enforcement officers for indecent behaviour.

In the first case, two men watching aeroplanes at the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport from their parked vehicle at night were issued a summons for indecent behaviour which they have denied

The other involved a teenage couple issued a summons while in a park in broad daylight.

Citing reports, Lim said officers in the first incident had even offered to "settle the matter" for RM500 and called on the Kelantan government to act against corruption.

Clearly the municipal officers were abusing their powers and urgent action is required to clear the good name of the Kelantan government of being clean and free from corruption as well as to allay concerns that non-Muslim rights are not respected by forcible imposition of Islamic laws," he said.

However, Lim flayed the media for twisting the incident as summonses for khalwat even thought they were for indecent behaviour and portraying the as a bid to impose Syariah law on non-Muslims.

'DAP responsible for incidents '

Meanwhile, MCA Youth secretary-general Chai Kim Sen ( below ) in a statement today blamed DAP for PAS' "arrogance" in imposing such rules on non-Muslims.

NONE "This arrogance of theirs can be directly contributed to DAP's lies about PAS' moderateness and that DAP will ensure that non-Muslims will be unaffected by PAS policies.

"Thus, DAP should stop playing the hero of the non-Muslims because it was their lies and their cowardice in standing up to PAS, that has caused all of this to happen," he said.

He also hit out at PAS for claiming that its Islamist policies will not affect non-Muslims, pointing out that it had been proven untrue in these cases.

"They are only bluffing in an attempt to fool the public into thinking that they have finally become more moderate," he said.
