Writing columns in mainstream newspapers will enable its readers to read alternative viewpoints, said columnist and social activist Marina Mahathir.     

She said writing columns in newspapers would create opportunity for readers to have different viewpoints and encourage change rather than shutting the doors of expression.     

"As long as there are columnists like me, Azmi Sharom and Zainah Anwar, at least readers have the opportunity to read alternative viewpoints.      

"If we pull out, then what readers get is the same old things," Marina told avid readers at her 'Telling It Straight' book signing event at Borders Queensbay, George Town today.     

Marina said allegations that she was free to write anything and protected because of her father, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was untrue as she writes based on facts and not gossip and rumours.     

"I just write what I feel and did not write with anyone in mind," she added.     

'Telling It Straight' is the third book compiling her works since 2003.    

In the book, Marina talks on contemporary issues, ideas and institutions of the day like human trafficking, the underclass, flash mobs, corruption and plain idiocy.
