A global superpower has found a “nominee” to do its bidding in Southeast Asia, claimed USM professor Chandra Muzaffar at a pro-government gathering today.

NONE While not naming this 'nominee', the former ally to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said that this person is someone he "used to be with".

"The United States and China are competing politically and Southeast Asia is their battleground...

"They want someone to do their bidding and they have chosen and trained that person as their nominee.

"I know him as I used to be with him, I know his politics and he has even sued me," he said at an NGO gathering today.

Chandra, who was answering a question from the floor, said that the foreign powers, which he chose not to name, were exerting their influence through foundations, such as the Open Society Institute, which is funded by billionaire financier George Soros.

Direct attack against opposition

The academic was also the only speaker who explicitly mentioned opposition parties PAS, PKR and DAP in his speech, while others did so in a veiled manner.

"Whatever their faults, the national leaders have a plan, that is the federal constitution, Rukunegara and Vision 2020.

"PAS with its hudud and syariah law which is proven to have failed in Arab states, DAP with their plan which does not appreciate history or multiculturalism, and PKR which focuses on one individual's quest to be prime minister," he said.

Whetting the audience's appetite for political speeches, Chandra said Malaysia is socio-politically successful and this is proven, among others, by the fact that the opposition has never won less than 35 percent popular vote.

"They say the election is unfair but reality shows otherwise," he told the 2,000-strong crowd at the state-sponsored Himpunan Barisan 1Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur today. 

'Defend status quo with your vote'

Other evidence of socio-political success, he said, include the peaceful transition between prime ministers, civil rule instead of military rule, and no foreign intervention which undermines sovereignty.

"Defend this through your vote in the 13th general election. Reject those who try to destroy our political system, which has been proven to be better than others.

According to organising secretariat chief Ahmad Maslan, the event cost "less than RM500,000" and is sponsored by the state and other backers.

Ahmad, who is deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department had said that the event was a bi-partisan event meant to explain and seek feedback on the 1Malaysia concept and other policies.

The Umno information chief, who had specifically said that the event had nothing to do with Umno, in his speech today revealed that the event was a great challenge for the "information secretariat and Umno overseas club alumni" to organise. 

Meanwhile, the Umno Overseas Club organisation also announced that it collected more than RM10,000 from the audience today to be donated to the Gaza humanitarian effort.
