PAS Youth has denied rumours circulating via SMS that they would be holding a protest against PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar’s statement on freedom of religion.

The offending SMS reads, “PAS Youth will hold a peaceful protest and will hand over a memorandum rebuking Nurul Izzah’s statement on the issue of equating Islam with the other religions and her support with the lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transsexuals (LGBT)...”

The rumours purported that the protest would be held tomorrow after Friday prayers at the PKR headquarters, in Tropicana, Petaling Jaya.

NONE PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan ( left, in photo ), in a statement today, condemned whoever is involved in spreading the rumours as irresponsible, and urged them to repent.

“Those individuals who have triggered and spread this slander are irresponsible individuals and lack morals.

“Making a statement in another person’s name is deceitful while disseminating a statement without asking about the source is wrong. Both are viewed as evils that displease Allah,” he said.

Nasarudin said he believes that the rumours are an attempt to take advantage of a recent controversy over Nurul’s statements to attack her and sour relations between Pakatan Rakyat component parties.

Last Saturday, Nurul told a forum that there should be no compulsion in religion when asked whether Malays should have religious freedom, with the caveat that she is “tied to prevailing views.”

She has since came under fire from the mainstream media and various politicians, accusing her of endorsing apostasy, which she has since denied .

“I stand by the general stance that after embracing Islam, a Muslim is subjected to syariah, just as a citizen is subjected to the federal constitution,” she said in her denial.
