An Indonesian contract worker, found dead at a rubber estate in Gerik this morning, is believed to have been attacked by an elephant.

The victim, who worked at the Felda Tawai 1, was identified only as Ngatmin, 44. He sustained injuries on the chest.

A co-worker stumbled on the body about 7.30am before alerting the authorities.

The body was sent to the district hospital.

Gerik police chief Supt Abdul Manab Baharum said initial investigations revealed footprints of an elephant near the body and in the vicinity.

He said Ngatmin had been working at the rubber estate for the past 15 days.

About 13 hours earlier, an Orang Asli was attacked by a tiger while heading home after a hunting trip at the Sungai Tekam forest in Gerik yesterday.

Lambok a/l Bopel, 25, sustained injuries on the back in the incident about 6.30pm.

Abdul Manab said that in the attack, the victim screamed and fled from the scene while the tiger ran towards a nearby forest.

He said Lambok was warded at the Gerik Hospital before being transferred to the Taiping Hospital.
