The Penang Malay Contractors Association has asked the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) to establish a centralised tender advertisement system to boost contractors' work performance.

In making the request, its president Mohamed Fadzill Hassan said under the system, it would be mandatory for government agencies and companies to call for tenders under a new mechanism.

He said contractors would also be required to use the same mechanism to bid for tenders and to verify their tender status.

The conventional advertisement system through newspapers was no longer relevant now as it was inefficient and redundant, he said.

"Regardless of whether selective tenders or direct negotiation tenders, all tenders should come under the centralised system. Furthermore, we don't have the time to go through all the newspapers.

"The centralised system will be more systematic and we can save on advertisement costs.

"The system is also more transparent, devoid of confusion and contradictions besides creating equal competition among contractors," he told reporters at the association's 36th annual general meeting here today.

"For instance, if there is a big project at a far away and isolated place like in Gerik, Sabah or Sarawak...we don't know who has been awarded the project.

"Under the new system, the government or the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission can track the project or projects that are facing problems," he said.

Mohamed however said the suggestion was still at discussion stage with the Unit Peneraju Agenda Bumiputera (Teraju) in the Prime Minister's Department and a comprehensive plan of the system would be handed to CIDB for avaluation soon.
