Defence Minister Zahid Hamidi has expressed concern that human rights watchdog Suaram would become a foreign tool through its foreign funding.

"I am worried if Suaram becomes a tool for foreigners. This is because Suaram's action of accepting foreign funding and being an irresponsible social critic against any government policies indirectly fuels this concern," he was quoted as saying in an Utusan Malaysia report today.

NONE Zahid said in the report that any problems within the country should be solved internally.

"Suaram's action of working with foreign parties that are always jealous of Malaysia's prosperity is unacceptable," he told the Malay language daily.

In a separate report, the daily quoted political analyst Zainal Abidin Baharom as saying that foreign funders were out to exploit NGOs against Umno and BN.

"The involved parties claim that they supposedly fight for freedom but their actual intention is to destroy the people's confidence in the government.

"At the same time, they work to shake Muslim faith and Malay sensitivity regarding issues concerning them," he was quoted as saying.
