Unhappy with deputy education minister Wee Ka Siong's failure to deliver, the most prominent Chinese educationalist organization Dong Zong announced that it will hold a protest on Sept 26, in front of Parliament House against him.

Its president Yap Sin Tian today lashed out at Wee for failing to tackle long standing issues in Chinese education, hence should step down immediately.

He also urged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to step in, and help resolve the rash of problems afflicting Chinese primary and secondary schools.

NONE Yap, ( right in photo ) unwilling to predict number of participant, stressed that the coming protest was not aimed at any specific political party, and it is just coincidental that the general election is looming.

He claimed that although Wee is named, but it is just because he is the government appointed person to deal with Chinese education issues.

Meanwhile, in a one page open letter handed out at a press conference today, Dong Zong urged all Chinese educationist to attend the Sept 26 protest.

It also called Najib to look into a few issues, namely lack of teachers and school board of directors' registration problem in Chinese primary school, as well as the demand for new Chinese Independent secondary school.

Litany of woes sounded

The letter also listed out five issues where Wee Ka Siong, who is also MCA youth chief, has proved that he is unfit to be deputy education minister, hence should step down.

They are:

  • The long time shortage of teachers for primary schools;
  • Teachers with no proficiency in the Chinese language transferred to these schools;
  • Lying about being punched at the March 25 rally;
  • Failure to fulfill the promise of providing Kuantan with a genuine Chinese independent school; and,
  • Sitting by and watching several Chinese primary schools board of directors being usurped by rivals.
"Meantime, he (Wee) tried to politicise Chinese education issue, deliberately oppressing Chinese education organisations and activists," the letter stated.

NONE Dong Zong was actively involved in three rallies this year, and recently renewed its call for another.

The rallies held in March 25, May 20 and July 29 , were to urge the government to solve the teacher shortage problem and build two new Chinese independent schools.

The NGO's relationship with Wee had turned sour early when Dong Zong pulled out from the round table discussion at the ministerial level to address the teacher shortage issue.
