Selangor police had deployed 119 policemen on duty on the night of the Merdeka eve celebration at the Dataran Kemerdekaan in Shah Alam last Thursday, state police chief Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said in a statement today.

"Please check the facts before making the statement, and do not make wild accusations.

"I had directed 119 policemen, including 86 uniform staff, for security and traffic control.

"In fact, I had approved a fireworks permit for the celebration.

"So, how could the police be accused of being unprofessional and uncooperative with the Selangor government on Merdeka eve night?" Tun Hisan asked reporters at the state police headquarters Aidilfitri open house in Shah Alam today.

Deputy inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar and Bukit Aman CID director Mohd Bakri Zinin were among the guests present.

Commenting further, Tun Hisan said the police mobile units were also despatched to the event to facilitate people to lodge reports of any criminal activity.

He said based on the reports received, there was no criminal incident on the night of the celebration.

Tun Hisan described the issuing of statement without verification as unethical and intended to demoralise the police.

The exco's allegation was carried in an English daily and a news portal.
