Activists from the student group Kumpulan Mahasiswa Independen (Kami) were today barred from entering Universiti Teknogi Mara (UiTM) in Shah Alam for attempting to campaign for free education.

Police prevented the students from entering the university's premises as they had attempted to distribute campaign leaflets to students in conjunction with the registration today for the new intake .

Kami deputy president, when contacted, claimed that some 50 police officers were stationed at one of the Shah Alam Section 7 campus' entrances and warned them against entering the university.

He added that the police had justified their actions by claiming that the activists might disrupt the registration process.

"At around 9.30am, while we were having breakfast, a few police officers already started approaching us and warned us not to enter UiTM.

"We said we would only take a while, but they did not allow it. So we distributed our leaflets to parents outside the entrance. Many parents showed us their support and took the leaflets," he said.

Khalid said the police however made the parents surrender the leaflets when the latter entered the university.

"Or else they cannot enter. The police also ordered us to disperse or action would be taken," he said.

Khalid said his group dispersed at 12.30pm after handing out some 100 leaflets in 30 minutes.
