In announcing this, inspector-general of police Ismail Omar said there were 243 deaths recorded from road accidents during the two weeks Hari Raya celebrations this year, compared to 289 last year.
"There is a reduction of road accidents by 8.5 percent this year, a reduction of 12.7 percent in road accident death cases and a general reduction of 12.9 per cent deaths compared to the same period last year," he said.
"There is also a reduction of daily deaths during the two weeks as it is an average of 16.2 deaths daily. This is lower than the national average of 18.8 daily on normal days," he said.
Ismail further announced a 17 percent reduction in break-in cases during the two weeks.
He attributed the success to better driving habits and also the close cooperation by the public in informing their nearest police station over their leaving to go back to their kampung.
According to the police there were 19, 606 road accidents last year and this declined to 17, 937 this year.
“This represented a decline of 1,669 road accidents,” said Ismail.
The IGP said that the police will continue to work with various agencies to reduce road accidents and identify ways in reducing the incidents further.
He said the force will continue to mount similar operations, and among the changes employed this time around is to provide advice to motorists at strategic places and also making their presence felt at black spot areas.
“We will continue with such activities at future festivities like Deepavali, Christmas and Chinese New Year,” he said.
As a motivational factor, Ismail said today the police gave out awards to 10 car drivers, 10 bus drivers and 30 motorcyclists for not getting any summonses during a three-year period.
“We recognise their achievement in being law-abiding citizens by not getting any summonses,” said the IGP.
Also present at the event were Public Order and Internal Security director Salleh Mat Rashid, Road Safety Department director-general Leslie Leon and Road Transport Department director-general Solah Mat Hassan.
