Raya week in KL sees 46 break-ins to date

Kuala Lumpur police received reports on 46 break-ins over the past week as the city went quiet for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday.

Criminal Investigation Department head Ku Chin Wah said the incidents occurred between Aug 16 and Aug 21, but that these were fewer compared to the same period last year when 57 cases were reported - although this did not coincide with Hari Raya.

"Of course we (had expected) an increase in break-ins (during Hari Raya). Many people (are still) not back yet, so there will probably be more reports after this week," he told a press conference today.

On a separate matter, Ku said police suspect that last Sunday's theft of thousands of ringgit from an ATM machine in Taman Tun Dr Ismail may have involved workers of a security firm.

"Even the recent case in Kajang, when two men were caught red-handed (trying to break an ATM machine, involved) workers from a company that was supposed to provide security for the transfer of money,” he said.

"Only they know the system and how to disable the alarm, so we believe that these cases, all of them, have the involvement of staff from these companies. They either are behind it or play a minor role in it.”

Ku added that the police are currently looking at two possible groups which are suspected of involvement in thefts from ATM machines in the Klang Valley.
