Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali today said that as a proponent of democracy, DAP chairperson Karpal Singh should support the implementation of hudud in Malaysia.

Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur today, he said this is because the majority of Malaysians are Muslim and in a democracy, the majority wins.

“If the majority want hudud, he cannot oppose it,” he said.

He added that Karpal should also respect Muslims’ right to hudud as it is part of freedom of religion and fundamental rights.

“Hudud is the fundamental right of Muslims,” he said.

“Hindu devotees during Thaipusam march from the city to Batu Caves, smashing coconuts on the road and causing a traffic jam, but it is their practice according to their religion,” he said.

As such, he advised Karpal to not issue any more offensive statements on hudud until he has truly studied the matter.

“Study and discuss it with Muslims scholars. As a lawyer, Karpal should not find it hard to grasp,” he said.

Asked if this advice only applies to Karpal, Ibrahim said: “To all non-Muslim politicians, including from DAP, MCA and Gerakan.”

“If they want us to respect their religion then they should not challenge Islam and its practices. We never question Hindu or Christian practices,” he said.

Ibrahim added that PAS’ soft stance on DAP's hudud opposition also shows that the Islamic party is “gutless” ( bacul ).

“As Muslims, we are taught to jihad against those who are against Islam (but PAS) can accept someone who maligns Islam,” he said.

He added that PAS is cheating people by saying they can implement hudud as it will not be able to win more seats than DAP in Parliament, and is instead winning votes for the latter party.

He said that those who speak out against hudud are “stepping on the heads of Muslims”, and this includes the “liberal Muslims” who themselves insult other Muslims.

“When other races insult Islam, they don't speak out against it. Why didn't they say something when pig heads were hurled into a mosque?

“But when paint is splashed onto a church, they make a lot of noise. These liberal Malays are born Muslim but don’t know their responsibilities,” he said.

‘BN can win two-thirds majority in February polls’

Meanwhile, Ibrahim said that Perkasa’s nationwide grassroots survey two months ago found that the BN will succeed in securing 136 Parliament seats, while they could narrowly win another 20 seats.

azlan “Perkasa is independent in its assessment and we are confident that BN can win two-thirds majority in the next general elections... which we expect will take place in February, 2013,” he said.

He said the face-to-face survey conducted by its members across Malaysia found that “the worse is over” for the BN.

“Those who voted opposition in 2008 will return to the BN, while those who voted Umno/BN will remain.

“About 50 percent of Indian voters will return to BN, while the middle class and business class Chinese support BN. This does not include the street petty traders,” he said.

He added that Perkasa foresees that BN will win Kedah while the states of Kelantan and Selangor are “50-50”.

“Penang is quite tough for BN at the moment unless the Malay vote for BN is solid. But if even if 30 percent of Chinese vote BN, there is hope for BN in Penang,” he said.

'Childish, extreme' to stop Muslim backing for DAP
