The implmentation of the 26th Ops Sikap tomorrow will be further fine-tuned to reduce road accidents during festive seasons.

Inspector-general of police Ismail Omar said improvements to the module used by police during the operations before this would be announced at the launch of Ops Sikap at Dataran Shah Alam, Selangor tomorrow.  

“Wait for tomorrow, we will announce what the changes are,” he told reporters after witnessing the packing of kuih raya by members of the Police Family Association (Perkep) at Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur today.

Ops Sikap is a road safety operation carried out by police with the cooperation of the Road Transport Department and several other agencies to reduce road accidents especially during festive seasons through monitoring on express buses, monitoring by patrol cars and setting up observation towers along accident-prone spots at highways and roads.

Apart from that, Ops Sikap had also lowered the speed limit from 90kph to 80kph while some from 80kph to 70kph on certain stretches as well as taking heavy vehicles off the road on certain days.

Since it was introduced in 2001 to replace Ops Statik, several new changes had been made to the implementation of Ops Sikap such as the on-the-spot fine for traffic offenders in the 25th Ops Sikap during the Chinese New Year as well as a proposal to impose a mandatory jail sentence on drivers who caused fatal accidents.

In this regard, Ismail said police would also be making several changes to the deployment of their personnel especially to reduce the incidence of crimes and community fear when celebrating the Aidilfitri.

A portion of the 4,700 packets of Hari Raya goodies prepared by 200 Perkep members today would be presented to police personnel tomorrow while the balance would be distributed to those on duty abroad.
