Crime cases in Perak number less than 20 daily and considering it is a large state, the situation is under control, according to Perak police chief Mohd Shukri Dahlan.  

He said most of the cases reported involved motorcycle thefts with one or two cases of housebreaking, snatch theft and robbery a day.

“I do not hide any statistics... there are less than 20 crime cases a day in Perak.   

“Housebreaking does occur but not every hour, sometimes once a month. If there are allegations of it happening every hour, it is a lie,” he told reporters after attending a kuih raya-presentation for the security forces in Ipoh today.  

He was commenting on the allegations by some quarters that housebreaking was rampant in Perak.

Shukri did not rule out the possibility that the allegations were made to undermine the credibility and deny the capability of the police.   

However, he said police would continue to strive at curbing crime including cooperating with Rela, the auxiliary police and police volunteers to step up patrols, especially in the crime hot spots.   

“We will continue to build public confidence that crime including during the festive seasons can be tackled,” he said.  

Asked to elaborate on press reports recently that the Bercham area in Ipoh is a crime hot spot, Shukri said police would make every effort to tackle the problem.  

“Combating crime nowadays is not only the task of the general duty personnel but we are also assigning other branches such as the traffic police to patrol, especially in the hot spots,” he said.
