The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) is monitoring 38 mosques in Selangor classified as having become a particular political party's platform.

"Before this we had 36 mosques on our watch list but now we have received two more and we will submit them to our enforcement unit for observation," Jais chairperson Marzuki Hussin was quoted as saying in a Sinar Harian report today.

The announcement followed a protest on Aug 1 where several Malay NGOs, angered by political speeches in mosques and suraus, had called on Jais  for a crackdown.

Marzuki in the report said apart from the complaints from these NGOs, the religious department had not received any others.

In a separate report the daily quoted PAS commissioner Dr Abdul Rani Osman as saying  thatthe party would take action against members who use mosques to discuss political parties.

However, he said that there was nothing wrong if the discussion just centered on politics alone as Islam and politics could not be separated.
