Sin Chew Daily today announced that a senior writer has resigned for plagiarism in an editorial piece.

According to an announcement on the daily's Facebook page, the management of the daily apologised to readers over incident.

“To take responsibility over the matter, the staff member who is responsible for the editorial had resigned.

"Furthermore, we also promise to conduct an internal investigation," read the announcement.

However, the daily did not mention the identity of the errant writer.

"We will not respond to any questions related to this," read the announcement.

When contacted, Sin Chew Daily editor-in-chief Pook Ah Lek refused comment.

The act of plagiarism was first raised by Facebook users who compared a July 7 editorial by Sin Chew to articles which appeared on Taiwanese dailies China Times and United Daily News on May 13 and June 16 respectively.

Photographs comparing the articles side-by-side were widely spread by Malaysian Facebook users to justify allegations of plagiarism.

The Sin Chew editorial had spoken about teenagers and young adults in relations to suicide and prostitution.
