Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said today the auditing of Universiti Selangor (Unisel) accounts was nearly complete, and a report would be released soon.

“We are in the final stages of completing the audit. These accounts have not been audited in the past five years,” he said during a press conference in Subang.

Yesterday, Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairperson Noh Omar Abdul challenged Abdul Khalid ( right )  to reveal the financial position of Unisel within a week.

Noh claimed to have evidence that Unisel was in debt and also accused the Selangor government of appointing politicians to the university’s board of directors to meddle with the decision making process.

He mentioned three politicians which have been appointed on the board, namely the menteri besar's political secretary Faekah Hussin, Merbok Member of Parliament Rashid Din and Hulu Langat Member of Parliament Che Rosli Che Mat.

Noh, who is Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister, has also questioned the resignations of former Universiti Kebangsaan lecturer Adnan Alias and former chief executive officer of Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia, Mohammad Ariffin Aton.

Academic qualifications

On speculations regarding the resignations, Khalid said there was no political pressure involved in them.

“I don’t like to have to talk about this, but Adnan asked to resign because he is starting an education institution which will be in conflict with his duties on Unisel’s board,” he explained.

He also insisted that members of Unisel’s board of directors were selected based on academic qualifications.

“The members of the board come from different backgrounds; some are academics while others may be politicians.

“But the primary attribute we look for is academic ability, and everything else is secondary,” said Khalid.

He pointed out Che Rosli was a physicist and former lecturer in nuclear science, while

Faekah was an accomplished lawyer.

“I am sure that Che Rosli’s academic degree is much more valued than Noh’s,” he quipped.

Noh was a former school teacher before graduating with a law degree from University of West London in 1987, when the institution was then called Thames Valley University.
