A total of 93 Sarawak schools, five of them secondary schools in the rural and coastal areas, are affected by the drought now experienced in the state, state secretary Mohamad Morshidi Ghani

said today.

He said the daily school sessions were unaffected and no school had been shut down due to the situation.  

“The state Action and Disaster Committee is monitoring the situation at several affected schools and, so far, no school was closed or students instructed to go home over the weekend. That decision comes under the jurisdiction of the state Education Department,” he told reporters at the awards presentation for the Chief Minister’s Department in Kuching.

Mohamad Morshidi said a total of 24,743 residents, involving 3,669 families, were affected due to the drought over the past few weeks.

He said that since June 25, the Public Works Department, with the help of the Welfare Department and Resident’s Office had distributed 626,541 litres of clean water to the affected areas, besides supplying bottles of drinking water.
