Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Abdul Aziz has agreed that it is better for parliament to only dissolve at the end of its five-year mandate to ward off uncertainties.

“As in the Westminster system, there is a tendency to say that five years means five years.

“If it is beneficial to the country, it is something that we can discuss and implement,” Nazri said while winding up the debate for the Supplementary Supply Bill in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He was responding to questions raised by Pakatan MPs during the debate on the problems posed by early dissolution, which had many on tenterhooks as the cliffhanger of the election date stretches on.

However, when pressed further by Salahuddin Ayob (PAS-Kubang Krian) on the matter, he said that ultimately the questions of election date is the purview of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

But Nazri said that he personally believes that full-term dissolution is better, fairer and avoids uncertainty, as those elected know that they will be in office for five years.

“If possible, I hope to be the catalyst to see that five years means five years here (too),” concluded the minister.
