PODCAST For the 16th Middle Malaysia podcast, media consultant Oon Yeoh speaks to Wong Chin Huat, a steering committee member of Bersih 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0, who recently got mugged by mat rempits.
The university lecturer cum social activist tells us about the attack , which he doesn't believe is politically motivated. Yet, the attackers didn't seem determined to take his money either.
Whatever the case, Wong says that the police are not doing enough to combat street crimes and gives some surprising statistics about the police force. He reveals, for example, how a significant portion of the force is still assigned to combating communism.
Wong also recalls how he was assaulted by the police during Bersih 3.0.
As a member of the Bersih steering committee, Wong is being sued (together with nine others) by the government for damages caused during the Bersih 3.0 rally.
He gives some details about the lawsuit and about how he and his peers are planning to fight it. Either way, the government loses, he says.
Change of government possible
Although many people are now looking at September for GE13, Wong thinks it could be delayed until next year.
Unlike many political analysts who say that it will take until GE14 for a change in government to happen, Wong thinks its entirely possible for Pakatan Rakyat to get a simple majority in Parliament.
When asked about the prospects of a Bersih 4.0, Wong says that's not the Bersih steering committee's call but the government's call. He explains exactly what he means by that in this podcast.
