300 protest proposed Kelantan highway

About 300 people gathered peacefully in Kota Baru today to hand a memorandum, containing questions over the Kota Baru-Kuala Krai highway project, to Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.
About 300 people gathered peacefully in Kota Baru today to hand a memorandum, containing questions over the Kota Baru-Kuala Krai highway project, to Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.
The group, representing various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the state, gathered at the entrance of Kota Darul Naim Complex for over an hour from 10.30am carrying banners and placards with slogans such as 'Foundation Stone Government', 'Resolve Water Problem First', 'How Sweet Is Your Promise' and "The Rakyat Have Donated, YB and Exco When?'.
The complex houses several state government departments and the menteri besar's office.
The group also brought along pushcarts, cangkul, spades and brooms for Nik Aziz, in signs of mockery of the PAS state government.
The memorandum and equipment were handed over by the group's representative, Kamaruddin Mohd Kasim, to the menteri besar's press secretary Fazli Shaari, who represented Nik Aziz.
Kamaruddin, who is also Gerakan Tukar Kerajaan PAS Kelantan Demi Rakyat (Tukar) chairperson, said their action aimed at taking a dig at the Kelantan government which had made a lot of empty promises to the people, especially with the general election approaching.
The memorandum stated, among other things, that the building of the Kota Baru-Kuala Krai highway was not a priority as there were more important matters that needed attention.
"Among the more urgent things that the PAS Kelantan government must do is solving the people's problems by building affordable houses, solving the long-standing clean water supply problem, providing aid to the poor and fulfilling old promises," it said.
Among the participating NGOs at today's peaceful gathering were Angkatan Generasi Melayu Muda, Kelantan Taxi Drivers Association, Majlis Intelektual Muda Darul Naim, Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Kelantan (Perkasa) and Majlis Tindakan Rakyat Kelantan.
On May 28, Nik Aziz performed the ground-breaking for the 73km highway project costing almost RM2 billion, to be funded partly by public contributions.
