Rais calls on Anwar to play 'gentleman' come GE13

your sayKairos: Since former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Deputy Prime Minister Muyhiddin Yassin and now Information Minister Rais Yatim are so obsessed with the theory that Pakatan Rakyat will resort to violence to wrest power should they lose in the next GE, well, let there be a pact signed between the government and the opposition that none will resort to force at all.

In other words, should BN lose, they must also promise that they too would not resort to violence to stay in power.

It is a gentleman's agreement that is good for the country. I am sure that both sides should have no problem agreeing to this. Once this pact is signed, then the rakyat can go and exercise their rights in peace.

Disbeliever: The ones who should exhibit leadership by not resorting to chaotic means should be Premier Najib Razak and his ruling Umno-BN government.

In the event that Umno-BN loses Putrajaya, they should be gentlemanly enough to admit defeat graciously and hand over power to the opposition.

Looking at the current scenario of butt exercise exhibitions, burger stalls protests and eggs and stones flying, obviously the work of Umno or at least die-hard Umno supporters, I doubt that Najib will be man enough to 'surrender' the federal administration to the opposition.

Even during the takeover of Selangor in 2008, former Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo resorted to carting away or destroying state documents.

Najib will not give up, thus his statement, "We must defend Putrajaya at all costs, even if our bodies are crushed and our lives lost."

Compare Gerakan's Koh Tsu Koon's handover of Penang to Lim Guan Eng and contrast it with Umno's Khir Toyo's shredding of official documents, leaving PKR's Khalid Ibrahim to pick up the pieces.

Rais should use his influence on PM to agree on a peaceful handover instead of believing Dr Mahathir Mohamad's theory that the opposition would resort to violence if it loses.

The current lawlessness in harassing Bersih co-chair Ambiga Sreenevasan, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and so on, without firm action from the police, shows BN leaders' tacit approval.

From what we have seen, who is likely to create violence but the sore losers?

Rais, be a real gentleman and ask the government to state that they will hand over power peacefully and conduct clean and fair elections.

Tailek: Up till now Najib has not commented on or answered the opposition's question as to whether BN would peacefully give up power should it lose GE13.

So Rais, please do not act as if BN has the moral high ground by suggesting that the opposition would cause chaos should it lose at GE13.

If anything, it is Umno-BN and their lackeys who will cause and are already causing chaos by violently disrupting the opposition's ceramah.

There was also talk that the PM had visited the generals to ask them to do something should BN lose the elections. So who is holding the moral high ground here? Certainly not BN.

Quigonbond: Rais is in for a grilling given the number of the comments rebutting him in Malaysiakini.

Can he tell Malaysians that he and Najib's other cabinet ministers are prepared to stand behind a pledge that they will surrender power peacefully if they lose in the coming general elections?

Every day they misdirect the public over this fundamental question is another day Malaysians get confirmation that that's precisely what BN is planning to dastardly do.

Think_Act_Live_NOW: I agree with the comments. I think the government is putting up pre-emptive propaganda because they intend to go on an all-out with cheating in the upcoming election.

If they win by cheating, they'll expect the opposition and the rakyat to rally and protest, and they will say that it is confirmation that the opposition is trying to take government by force, thereby using that as an excuse to lock up the opposition leaders.

We need to be very careful and not act out of emotion. The government is not going to let go of power easily.

Are they so confident of winning by electoral cheating and giving handouts or are they going to impose martial law the moment BN loses GE13 by triggering violence using their goon squads and then blaming it on Pakatan and Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim?

Pissed Off: The most likely scenario - Umno-BN loses GE13 and stirs up a riot and blames it on opposition parties - the very same script used in May 13, 1969.

Only difference is the actors and especially the extras (the rakyat) this time around are more informed and vigilant of the ruling elite's plans to stay in power at all costs.

Those in Umno-BN have too many skeletons in the closet and losing Putrajaya means the likelihood of paying for their crimes.

Raja Chulan: I simply cannot agree with the reasoning that because the opposition was able to win Penang, Selangor, Kedah and Kelantan, the electoral roll must be clean and the process fair.

Just because you managed to win some, it does not make the cheating all right. What cluttered logic is this?

Maybe, if the elections were free and fair, the opposition would have done much better or even formed the government the last GE. Umno-BN really thinks that we, the rakyat, are so stupid.

Chan Huan Boon: I suspect Umno believes that by repeating a lie many times, it will become a truth. That is why it started with Mahathir, then the PM, then the DPM and now Rais.

Many more will follow to tell the same lie, hoping it will turn into truth.

Bluemountains: History has shown that the opposition had lost 12 general elections and have yet to cause any violence.

The Umno leader who claimed to have burned bridges with Umno at one time seemed to have a crystal ball and is able to predict what will happen after GE13.

Blind Freddo: The question should not be: Will Pakatan resort to violence if they lose? It should be: How much violence will BN use when they lose?
