Radio Free Sarawak today said it believes its presenter Peter John Jaban has gone into hiding out of concerns that he would be arrested by police for questioning.

The station in a statement today added that it has still no word from Jaban, known on air as Papa Orang Utan, but said it has received news that the deejay is presently moving freely in Miri.

NONE"This is encouraging information and we are currently concluding, therefore, that he has decided to hide himself voluntarily after being frightened by questioning at the Kota Kinabalu airport and being led to understand that he would be wanted for further questioning when he got to Sarawak," said Radio Free Sarawak.

On Thursday, Jaban arriving at Miri airport was met with heavy police presence, but his lawyers succeeded in taking him away as the police had not received any instructions on what to do.

While they were en route to Miri town, Jaban’s party was stopped by a car with three unidentified men and the deejay subsequently took off with the three in their vehicle without any word to the lawyers.

It was initially suspected that police had detained Peter but the authorities have denied this.

"The police in Miri have announced that they have received no instructions to detain him.

“However, they are now looking for him, because of the concerns over his confusing disappearance after he left the car of the friend who picked him up from the airport," said Radio Free Sarawak.

The underground radio station added that Jaban's "immediate safety" is no longer feared, but added the UK-based deejay’s high blood pressure condition risks being aggravated by alleged threats against him for his role in Radio Free Sarawak.

Radio Free Sarawak, which operates out of the UK, is critical of the Sarawak government, particular its Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud and is aimed at disseminating information to the state's rural populace.
