New judge to hear Manjeet's suit against Gobalakrishnan

A new judge will hear a RM2.5 million defamation suit filed by senior lawyer Manjeet Singh Dhillon against Padang Serai Member of Parliament N Gobalakrishnan, Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Berhad (TV3 ) and two others.

A new judge will hear a RM2.5 million defamation suit filed by senior lawyer Manjeet Singh Dhillon against Padang Serai Member of Parliament N Gobalakrishnan, Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Berhad (TV3) and two others.
On Sept 26, last year, he filed the suit naming Gobalakrishnan, Utusan Malaysia journalist Raja Syahrir Abu Bakar, Utusan Melayu (M) Berhad and TV3 as defendants.
Counsel Americk Sidhu is representing Manjeet, while Hasnal Rezua Merican and Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin are acting for Gobalakrishnan, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah for Raja Syahrir and Utusan Melayu, and Lim Qi Si for TV3.
Today, they met in chambers High Court Judge Dr Prasad Sandosham Abraham, who initially heard the suit.
Lim said Abraham was scheduled to hear the issue on whether the words complained about were defamatory.
“He will leave the suit to a new judge as he would be transferred to the Shah Alam High Court,” she said when asked to comment on the matter by reporters.
Abraham’s transfer is effective June 15.
Lim said a new judge from the Shah Alam High Court, Nor Bee Ariffin, would hear the matter.
She said the court fixed July 3 for mention of the suit.
Manjeet, in his statement of claim, said Gobalakrishnan gave the media an interview, in which he falsely and maliciously made derogatory remarks about him, without basis and calculated to cause injury to his reputation.
He said the journalist’s report on the interview was thereafter, “falsely and maliciously published and distributed by Utusan on Aug 17, last year, under the heading, ‘Manjeet selalu burukkan kerajaan’ (Manjeet constantly badmouths the government) with reckless disregard for the truth of the contents”.
A substantial part of the interview was alleged to have been publicly broadcast on TV3 news on Aug 16, last year.
Manjeet is seeking RM2.5 million in damages, including exemplary damages with costs and other relief deemed fit by the court.
