A group of cyclists from Johor Baru kicked off a physical challenging three-day journey this morning - pedalling from the peninsula's southernmost city to Kuantan in support for the anti-Lynas cause.

johor people in support of anti lynas 300512 02Calling themselves ‘Lynas Busters', some 15 cyclists took off at about 6.30am and are scheduled to arrive in Teluk Chempedak in Kuantan, Pahang, around 10.30am on June 3.

According to anti-Lynas group Himpunan Hijau chairperson Wong Tack, the cyclists comprise individuals from the Johor Yellow Flame, the Millipede Bikers Team and the Footprint Bicycle Team.

"Let's go! Use actions to prove that JB folks are not ignorant," the journey organiser says in a poster.

Upon reaching Kuantan, some 360km away, the cyclists will hand over a list of signatures from the people of Johor Bahru opposing the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant in Gebeng, Kuantan, to Himpunan Hijau, one of the groups spearheading the campaign against the controversial rare earth refinery.

Wong in a statement expressed gratitude to the cyclists and called on all anti-Lynas supporters to continue to remain steadfast with Himpunan Hijau against the plant, which produced radioactive wastes.

"Their action reflects that the anti-Lynas sentiment has spread like wildfire across the nation. The grassroots community is now empowered to take action to safeguard the environment and the well-being of our future generations."

johor people in support of anti lynas 300512 01The bikers had met with the Himpunan Hijau steering committee in Kuantan last Sunday to coordinate the event, Wong said.

The Lynas Busters also gave their support to Himpunan Hijau's ‘Occupy Balok-Gebeng 24 Hours' event to be held on June 23-24.
