However, Azmin refused to elaborate on the specific claims in the investigation papers, saying he does not want to be “dragged” into defending a 17-year-old allegation.
"All this has been discussed and I gave my full cooperation to the authorities. Let them decide (to charge me or not). I don't have that amount of money,” he said in an interview this morning.
He said he had given the authorities all the bank statements and documents needed when he was probed in 1995, when he was private secretary to then deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Turning the tables on his detractors, Azmin said that, if he is indeed guilty having amassed wealth at the time, he should have been charged when Anwar was sacked from all government posts in 1998.
He noted that Anwar, too, had not been charged for trying to cover up the case, as alleged by a source cited by Raja Petra (left).
Referring to Kalsom Taib's book ‘The Shafee Yahya Story: Estate Boy to ACA Chief’, Azmin said the prosecution decided not to press charges.
Kalsom, the wife of ACA chief Shafee Yahya, wrote that Anwar was initially to have been charged with influencing Shafee to close the investigations against Azmin, but the charge was not eventually included.
Azmin reiterated that he had already given an explanation to the authorities.
“Why should I explain to Raja Petra? Who is he? I've done my part, given full cooperation to the authorities 17 years ago and now you want me to repeat the same thing?” he said.
Timing questioned
He said Raja Petra's timing also raises questions, in that the blogger appears to be trying to distract Pakatan Rakyat leaders from their focus on the upcoming polls.
“(They) want to drag me into slander and lies because they want me to talk about it and lose focus on our agenda. I will not fall into their trap.
“My focus is the election. I have (been) cleared, my conscience is cleared. They are not interested in the truth.”
He said his constituents need no explanation from him as they know him “too well”.
“Don't undermine the wisdom of the people. They know who Raja Petra is, they can see the timing of these allegations and the people in my constituency know me too well. I have been there since 1968,” he said.
He said this latest attack is similar to allegations about his daughter's paternity, which he had answered via two DNA tests that proved he and his wife Shamsidar Tahrin are the biological parents.
“Are they interested in the truth? No. They are interested in repeating slander and lies to tarnish the image of Pakatan leaders.”
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will convene a meeting tomorrow to discuss whether or not to revive the investigations against Azmin.
The commission lodged a police report last night on the document ‘leaked’ by Raja Petra.
