Deputy Internal Security Minister Noh Omar said today that his ministry is looking into placing an embedded counsellor at each police district headquarters in the country to guide and help policemen who have problems.

This is to help policemen seek a balance between their mental wellbeing and the heavy responsibility as keepers of the peace, he said in a Bernama report.

Previously, certain officers acted as counsellors at contingent police headquarters but they were not as accessible due to distances and other problems, he said after opening the Tanjong Karang Maulidur Rasul celebration in Selangor this morning.

Corporal commit suicide?

Such a move was to provide policemen with the much needed mental strength and peace to perform their duties, he said when commenting on the apparent suicide of a Lans Koperal at the Kuala Selangor Police District Headquarters on Wednesday.

On the Hong Kong authorities' seizure of old machineguns belonging to the Royal Malaysia Police which were heading for sale as antiques in the United States, Noh said the issue did not affect Malaysia's credibility in maintaining peace and security.

He said from the perspective of the country's laws, the weapons had been declared discarded and the shipping company's documents stated that they were strategic materials.
