Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said 21 individuals, including police personnel, have surrendered themselves to the police to assist investigations into Bersih 3.0 rally.

These individuals are among the 141 individuals whose mugshots have been released by the police.

However, Hishammuddin did not reveal how many of those who have surrendered are police personnel.

Several police personnel are wanted for assaulting protestors.

The numbers were revealed by Hishammuddin during a press conference in Putrajaya.

At a separate event, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said that the 141 individuals have up to tomorrow to surrender.

"We don't need an arrest warrant. (Arrests for) rioting does not require a warrant," he said.

Hunting down 3 groups

Hishammuddin also revealed that the police are investigating three groups.

The first group comprise protesters who had no intention to assemble peacefully and broke the law.

The second group are Bersih 3.0 or political leaders who tried to "hijack" the rally.

The last comprise police personnel who allegedly assaulted the public.

The Bersih rally on April 28 saw an estimated 100,000 people gather near Dataran Merdeka to call for free and fair elections. 

The rally started peacefully with a festive atmosphere.

However, when a small portion of the crowd breached the barricades to Dataran Merdeka, the police reacted with a barrage of tear gas fire.

Scores of protestors and a few journalists were injured due to assault by the police. The Bar Council had criticised the police for using excessive force.
